BLAYNE’S STORY

Blayne Hardy Barfield was the essence of a graceful, young southern woman. Those who encountered her in life were met with sparkling eyes, an infectious smile and a caring demeanor. But behind this beautiful presence, Blayne struggled intensely with feelings and emotions she could not understand or share. Her struggles ultimately reached a level she could no longer battle, and this vibrant, much-loved 30 year-old ended her life. Sifting through a crushing brokenness, those who loved her most began a painful journey of reflection to try to understand Blayne’s death by suicide.

Growing up in a home with nurturing parents and an older brother and sister, Blayne was surrounded by love and security, driven by a strong faith in God. An extended family of devoted grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins – as well as many friends – provided her with an extensive support system that grew as she did. As a child Blayne was happy, easy-going and sensitive to others’ needs. These traits continued into adolescence, where she excelled in many areas and matured into a conscientious young adult.

One of Blayne’s middle school teachers remembers her as “a happy adolescent, full of compassion and surrounded by a host of friends.” In high school she was described as “a poised, kind and graceful young lady who was quite independent.”

As she entered her college years, Blayne continued to foster relationships through her classes and her sorority. After graduating from Auburn University with a degree in marketing, she entered the workforce. After a year spent pursuing a marketing career, Blayne sensed God was leading her in a different direction. She returned to college, obtained her masters degree and became a middle school teacher like her mother. Blayne soon fell in love, married, and was further blessed by God seventeen months later with a beautiful baby daughter. This family of three built a life together, surrounded by family, friends, church and careers.

Blayne’s life-long dreams were becoming reality – a loving home, a devoted family, a rewarding career. Those around her saw a beautiful, happy, fun-loving person. What they could not see were the inner battles she fought daily. They could not see a young wife and mother struggling to survive. It was a struggle she eventually lost.

In an instant Blayne was gone.

In the years following Blayne’s death, family and close friends embarked on a mission of prayer and reflection to help with the immense grief and sadness, and hopefully gain some understanding of this tragedy. Out of this mission emerged the Blayne Hardy Barfield Foundation, a nonprofit organization.
